House Bill 1105

AN ACT TO AMEND CHAPTER 2145, LAWS OF 2006, TO EXTEND THE EXISTENCE OF THE JOINT COMMITTEE TO STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF A STATE CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  Chapter 2145, Laws of 2006, is amended as follows:

     WHEREAS, the Legislature finds that there is a need to closely examine and further study the feasibility of establishing a civil rights museum in the City of Jackson, Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That:

     There is hereby created a study committee for the purpose of studying the feasibility of establishing a civil rights museum in the City of Jackson, Mississippi.  The study committee shall be composed of the following:

          (a)  The Executive Director of the State Department of Archives and History, or his designee;

          (b)  Three (3) members of the Senate to be appointed by the Lieutenant Governor;

          (c)  Three (3) members of the House of Representatives to be appointed by the Speaker of the House; and

     Members of the committee who are not legislators shall not receive any compensation or per diem, but may receive travel reimbursement provided under Section 25-3-41.  Legislative members of the committee shall receive per diem, travel or other expenses, if authorized by the Management Committees of the Senate and the House of Representatives, from the contingent expense funds of their respective houses in the same amounts as provided for committee meetings when the Legislature is not in session; provide that no per diem or expense for attending meetings of the committee shall be paid while the Legislature is in session.

      The study committee, as it existed on December 31, 2006, shall remain in existence and continue to work until construction of the museum is completed.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
