AN ACT TO PROHIBIT THE USE OF CELLULAR TELEPHONES WHILE OPERATING A MOTOR VEHICLE WITHIN A SCHOOL ZONE; TO PRESCRIBE PENALTIES FOR VIOLATIONS OF THIS ACT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1. (1) It is unlawful for any person to use a cellular telephone while operating a motor vehicle on a street, road or highway within a school zone during school hours where signs are clearly posted designating such area as a school zone.
(2) Any person who violates the provisions of subsection (1) of this section shall be punished, upon conviction, as provided under Section 63-9-11.
SECTION 2. Section 1 of this act shall be codified as a separate code section in Chapter 3, Title 63, Mississippi Code of 1972.
SECTION 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2007.
