A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING EARL BARRON, JR., FOR HAVING AUGUST 12, 2006, NAMED IN HIS HONOR BY THE CITY OF CLARKSDALE.
WHEREAS, the City of Clarksdale, Mississippi, was proud when one of their own became a member of the elite club of champions when his team, the Miami Heat, won the 2006 National Basketball Association Championship; and
WHEREAS, as a result of the great pride felt by many citizens of Clarksdale, August 12, 2006, was declared Earl Barron, Jr. Day; and
WHEREAS, no one could be as proud as his parents, Jeraldean and the late Earl Barron, Sr.; and
WHEREAS, this "son" of Clarksdale graduated with honors from Clarksdale High School in 1999; and
WHEREAS, as a high school student, he excelled in basketball and tennis; and
WHEREAS, as a high school basketball player, he averaged 21 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks; and
WHEREAS, as a high school tennis player, he defeated all district opponents in mixed doubles and advanced to the state semifinals with the assistance of his tennis partner, Molly Grantham; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from high school, he attended the University of Memphis as scholar-athlete as a member of the University of Memphis Tiger Basketball Team; and
WHEREAS, as a college basketball player, he earned status in the 1000 Point Club and helped his team win the 2002 National Invitational Tournament title, scoring 25 points on 11 of 14 shootings, and being named to the Spalding-NIT All-Tournament Team; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure at the University of Memphis, he was one of only 12 collegians selected to represent the United States of America in the 2001 World University Games in China; and
WHEREAS, this esteemed athlete graduated from the University of Memphis in 2003 with a bachelor of business administration degree; and
WHEREAS, before displaying his exceptional basketball talents on the Miami Heat Basketball Team, he played in China, Turkey and the Philippines and National Basketball Developmental League; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives of the State of Mississippi to recognize and commend such honors as having a specific day officially named in your honor:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby celebrate and commend Earl Barron, Jr., for having August 12, 2006, named in his honor by the City of Clarksdale.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Earl Barron, Jr., Jeraldean Barron and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
