AN ACT TO AUTHORIZE THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF TALLAHATCHIE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, TO HOLD A SPECIAL ELECTION ON NOVEMBER 7, 2006, TO FILL A VACANCY ON THE TALLAHATCHIE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  Notwithstanding any provisions of Sections 23-15-833, 23-15-835 and 23-15-839 to the contrary, the Board of Supervisors of Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, may call a special election to fill the unexpired term for the board vacancy in Supervisors District No. 3 on November 7, 2006.  The commissioners of election shall give notice of the election by posting notices at the courthouse and in each supervisors district for sixty (60) days prior to the election.  Candidates shall qualify by not later than 5:00 p.m. on September 29, 2006.  In all other respects the special election shall be held, conducted and returned in the same manner as provided by general law for filling vacancies in county and county district elective offices.

     SECTION 2.  The Attorney General of the State of Mississippi shall submit this act, immediately upon approval by the Governor, or upon approval by the Legislature subsequent to a veto, to the Attorney General of the United States or to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in accordance with the provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended and extended.

     SECTION 3.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after the date it is effectuated under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended and extended.
