Senate Concurrent Resolution 560

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE "AKC CANINE GOOD CITIZEN PROGRAM" AND SUPPORTING ITS EFFORT TO PROMOTE RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP IN THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI.

WHEREAS, dogs play an extremely important role in the lives of many Mississippi citizens by serving as companions, therapy dogs and assistance dogs, and are viewed by many as "family members"; and

WHEREAS, it is recognized that dog-related problems are most often caused by irresponsible owners; and

WHEREAS, responsible dog ownership is encouraged in Mississippi and responsible owners should properly control and provide adequate training for their dogs; and

WHEREAS, "Canine Good Citizen" programs identify and officially recognize those dogs who behave as members in good standing with the community; and

WHEREAS, the AKC Canine Good Citizen Program, which was developed by the American Kennel Club, teaches pet owners that dogs should exhibit "good citizen" behaviors in the presence of other people and animals, in both the home and the community; and

WHEREAS, there is critical need during disasters and emergencies for pets to have permanent identification and be well-behaved and manageable:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That the Legislature of the State of Mississippi encourages dog training programs and kennel clubs to provide training and education for community pet owners that result in dogs being "Canine Good Citizens."

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to representatives of the "AKC Canine Good Citizen Program" in Mississippi and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
