AN ACT DIRECTING THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI SCHOOL OF PHARMACY TO CONFER A NON-TRADITIONAL PHARM D DEGREE ON THOSE PHARMACISTS HOLDING A BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN PHARMACY WHEN CERTAIN EDUCATIONAL CRITERIA HAVE BEEN MET; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  (1)  The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy and the Mississippi Board of Pharmacy will provide access to continuing education programs in the following fields of disease statement management:  dyslipidemia, asthma, diabetes and anticoagulation.

     An individual desiring to obtain the Non-Traditional Pharm D degree must hold a current unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in the State of Mississippi and must have at least five (5) years experience as a pharmacist.

     An individual holding a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy desiring to obtain the Non-Traditional Pharm D degree must successfully complete sixteen (16) hours of continuing education credit, eight (8) hours of which must be live, in each of the fields of disease state management of dyslipidemia, asthma, diabetes and anticoagulation, for a total of sixty-four (64) hours.  The sixty-four (64) hours of continuing education credit must be obtained from those programs presented by the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy or approved by the Mississippi Board of Pharmacy and must be completed within a two-year period from the date of enrollment.

     (2)  The Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning shall implement the provisions of this act.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2006.
