A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MR. MARCUS "TINK" SPENCER FOR BEING A RECIPIENT OF THE BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD MISSISSIPPI AGELESS HEROES AWARD FOR 2006.
WHEREAS, Mr. Marcus "Tink" Spencer, age 96, and a resident of Greenwood, Mississippi, has been selected as a statewide honoree as a 2006 Mississippi Ageless Hero for his creativity; and
WHEREAS, his longtime passion for music and his artistic skill on the saxophone caused him to receive such recognition, as he plays for the Greenwood Community Concert Band; and
WHEREAS, with his love of music tracing far back into his childhood in Winona, his interest in music started as a piano student, switching to the violin and ultimately to his favorite, the saxophone; and
WHEREAS, attending Ole Miss for one year before studying bookkeeping and typing at Chillicothe Business School in Chillicothe, Missouri, Mr. Spencer moved back to Winona and married the former Ruth Thompson in 1936; and
WHEREAS, a World War II veteran and longtime employee of Gerard Chevrolet, Farm Security Administration, Quinn Drug Company and Mid-South Sporting Goods, "Tink" joined the Greenwood Community Concert Band in 1976; and
WHEREAS, perhaps Mr. Spencer's most unselfish work is his involvement through volunteerism with Friends of Cottonlandia and local reading programs for children at two Greenwood churches; and
WHEREAS, "Tink" attributes longevity to his family genes, faith in God and maintaining an active lifestyle; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize outstanding individuals, such as Mr. Marcus "Tink" Spencer, who exhibits the very best spirit and vitality of our nation's seniors while helping his community through his creativity, volunteering and inspiring others:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mr. Marcus "Tink" Spencer for being a recipient of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Mississippi Ageless Heroes Award for 2006.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Marcus "Tink" Spencer and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
