A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MRS. WILLIE TURNER FOR HER OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE AND LIFEWORK IN HUMPHREYS COUNTY.

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Willie Turner who was born September 27, 1911, to the late Abe and Leaire Cotton, is being recognized on March 25, 2006, for her community service and lifework at Calvary M.B. Church, where she is a member; and

     WHEREAS, a proud resident of Midnight, Mrs. Turner has touched the lives of nearly half the population of Humphreys County as a midwife who delivered over 2,063 babies in the county and surrounding counties; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Turner, learned the skill of assisting in the delivery of babies by receiving training from her aunt, Rhoda Gails, and Dr. W.A. James, and after retiring as a midwife, she worked with the Mississippi Nutrition Aid Program for nine years where she won numerous awards; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Turner, now 94 years of age, has been a community activist and continues to touch lives by taking a special interest in families in need of clothing and food; and

     WHEREAS, a true missionary, Mrs. Turner spent her own resources and time collecting clothing and food for delivery to those in need, and she continues to send cards and visit the sick, shut-ins and destitute in Midnight and the surrounding areas; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Turner, a lover of gardening, continues to be a vibrant and charismatic woman who touches the lives of those who are less fortunate; and

     WHEREAS, a proud and caring mother, Mrs. Turner has been steadfastly supported by her four children, 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one sister; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Turner, who has a sincere love for people, serves as an inspirational role model to many individuals in Humphreys County by living the motto of putting the needs of others before her own; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend an individual such as Mrs. Willie Turner, as she makes her community a better place to live by being a shining light to Humphreys County as a whole:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and recognize Mrs. Willie Turner for her community service and lifework and wish her continued success in all her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Willie Turner and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
