A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING JIM QUICK ON BEING SELECTED AS THE 2005 BELLSOUTH MALE SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR FOR THE STATE GAMES OF MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, Mr. Jim Quick of Meridian, Mississippi, was selected as the 2005 BellSouth Male Sportsman of the Year for the State Games of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, this distinguished award seeks to honor athletes who personify the ideals of the state games, such as participation, sportsmanship, achievement, effort and positive attitude; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Quick, who superbly exhibits all the attributes of the Sportsman of the Year, has participated in nine out of 15 state games that have been held and has received 15 awards from the games which include awards for cycling, mountain biking, 5K road racing and kayaking; and

     WHEREAS, as an indication of his determination and tenacity, Mr. Quick quit a 12-year two to three pack a day cigarette habit so that he could run without having the medical problems that accompany smoking; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Quick, who has been running since 1978, was inspired to finish a triathlon; and in 1983, he fulfilled this dream and successfully completed the Heart of Dixie Triathlon; and

     WHEREAS, over the years, Mr. Quick has completed 300 races which include the Bike Across Mississippi, and he has finished three marathons which include the well-known Boston Marathon; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Quick also competed in the Senior Olympics in 2005 where he won five gold medals in cycling and he won the overall cycling road race and a gold medal in his age division in the 2005 State Games of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Quick, who is a man of discipline and will power, held a rowing streak of 564 consecutive days and has had two years of over 2,000 miles run and two years of over 10,000 miles of cycling in his training; and

     WHEREAS, at the age of 54, Mr. Quick continues to compete in various events and is victorious as demonstrated by his being selected the BellSouth Male Sportsman of the Year; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend an outstanding and athletic Mississippian such as Jim Quick who is a remarkable inspiration for both the youth and the elderly throughout this great state:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Jim Quick on being selected as the 2005 BellSouth Male Sportsman of the Year and express heartiest wishes for continued success in all his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Jim Quick and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
