A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING PROFESSOR GEORGE COLVIN COCHRAN ON HIS OUTSTANDING CAREER ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE LEGAL FIELD AND AS A PROFESSOR OF LAW AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI SCHOOL OF LAW.
WHEREAS, Professor George C. Cochran has made many outstanding contributions to the legal field as a practitioner of law and as a professor for over 33 years in academia; and
WHEREAS, after receiving a bachelor of science degree from North Carolina State College where he was class president in 1958, Professor Cochran served as First Lieutenant, Infantry, in the United States Army; and
WHEREAS, Professor Cochran, after bravely serving his country, received his juris doctor degree, with high honors, from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1964 where he was Editor-in-Chief of North Carolina Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif; and
WHEREAS, after receiving his law degree, Professor Cochran served as a law clerk for Associate Justice Stanley F. Reed and Chief Justice Earl Warren of the United States Supreme Court, and was an attorney for the President's Commission on the Assassination of President Kennedy; and
WHEREAS, Professor Cochran joined the faculty of the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1972 and became a full professor within six years; and
WHEREAS, Professor Cochran teaches Supreme Court Practice, Constitution Law I and II and Federal Jurisdiction at the University of Mississippi and has been twice voted, in 1985 and 2000, by the law school student body as the top professor, which exemplifies the respect that the student body holds for the professor; and
WHEREAS, in addition to expertly teaching law students at the University of Mississippi, Professor Cochran is a visiting professor at Fordham University where he continues to spread his knowledge of constitution law; and
WHEREAS, Professor Cochran has made many publications, received a number of honors and awards, and has litigated in administrative agencies, the Mississippi Supreme Court, federal district courts, various United States circuit courts of appeal and the United States Supreme Court; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to pay tribute to an exemplary Mississippian such as Professor George C. Cochran who devotes his life to skillfully educating the lawyers of tomorrow and making a positive impact on the legal field as a whole:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Professor George Colvin Cochran on his outstanding legal career and wish him much success in all his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Professor George C. Cochran, the University of Mississippi School of Law and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
