A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE DISTINGUISHED CAREER OF MARK DAVID MUSICK, PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTHERN REGIONAL EDUCATION BOARD.
WHEREAS, since August 1975, Mark David Musick has served on the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), the nation's first interstate educational compact, and, after demonstrating his wise and effective leadership, he was chosen by his colleagues as the board's Chief Executive, a position he has held since July 1, 1989; and
WHEREAS, he has worked tirelessly to provide excellent information and informed advice to board members and other state-level leaders in education and government; and
WHEREAS, he was instrumental in the preparation of SREB's 1981 report, The Need for Quality, which established specific recommendations for improving schools and colleges and pointed the way for the educational reform movement of the 1980s; and
WHEREAS, he has been directly responsible for SREB-State Data Exchange, one of the most timely and highly regarded comparative data sources on education, and spearheaded the preparation of the SREB Fact Book on Higher Education, the board's most referenced report on trends and developments in education; and
WHEREAS, a widely recognized authority on issues of educational standards and assessments, he lent his time and expertise to the efforts of the National Education Goals Panel, the National Council on Education Standards and Testing, and the Governing Board for the National Assessment of Educational Progress; and
WHEREAS, education is the cornerstone of a strong and productive society, and, throughout the course of a successful and laudable career, Mark David Musick has contributed greatly to the strength of our schools and colleges:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby join to recognize the distinguished career of Mark David Musick, President of Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), and express our sincere gratitude for his many valuable contributions to education, and extend our best wishes to him and his family for his future health and happiness on the occasion of his retirement.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Mark David Musick and be forwarded to the SREB in Atlanta, Georgia, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
