A RESOLUTION COMMENDING BUDDY SHEFFIELD UPON BEING NAMED THE BILOXI BAY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE'S 2005 BILOXIAN MADE GOOD HONOREE.
WHEREAS, this year's Biloxi Bay Chamber's Biloxian Made Good honoree, Buddy Sheffield, native Biloxian and theatrical writer, attended Biloxi High School, where his love for theater grew and in his senior year, upon being awarded a scholarship to the summer theatre program at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), started college only three days after graduating from Biloxi High; and
WHEREAS, very active in technical theatre as well as acting while at USM, Mr. Sheffield was awarded the Louis Gertler Award for proficiency in technical theatre for two consecutive years, and while still a student began SET (Sheffield Ensemble Theatre), a children's theatre company, which grew to become the most popular theatre for youth in America; and
WHEREAS, based in Biloxi and proudly carrying the name of its home city to every one of its venues, SET produced plays and musicals for its home theatre in the summers and in the summer of 1978, the company produced a season of plays, including the musical, The Robber Bridegroom, historical play, Biloxi and Cleavage, a musical that experienced a short run on Broadway in 1980; and
WHEREAS, after an unfortunate series of events left the Louisiana World Fair Exposition in financial strain, SET, which was a primary entertainment contractor for the Expo, was forced to leave the business; and
WHEREAS, never allowing his spirit to be dampened, Buddy moved to the West Coast in 1984 and tried his hand as a television screenwriter, which was a proven success as he continues to do so some 20 years later; and
WHEREAS, to his credit Mr. Sheffield has written, co-written, produced or co-produced for such shows as In Living Color, Dolly starring Dolly Parton, Don't Forget Your Toothbrush, The Emmy Awards, The Edge, The Rosie and Buddy Show, Roundhouse, Super Bowl Saturday Night, The Beverly Hillbillies, Straight Talk, It Takes a Village and is currently working on Ruthless Debutantes, a pilot series for HBO; and
WHEREAS, his honors include the Sara Spenser Child Drama Cup, the prestigious Jennie Heiden Award, three Emmy nominations, four Cable Ace nominations, one Cable Ace award, one Ollie Award and one NAACP Image Award; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend the works of a native son, such as Mr. Sheffield, who has made an impressive mark on society through his television and theatrical compositions, such as Mr. Sheffield:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mr. Buddy Sheffield upon being named Biloxi Bay Chamber of Commerce's 2005 Biloxian Made Good honoree and express our heartiest wishes for success in all his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Buddy Sheffield and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
