A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE OF MRS. PAULA JONES SALTER AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HER PASSING.

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Paula Jones Salter, born September 3, 1959, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Captain Whitney B. Jones, Sr., and Merle Dent Jones, departed this earthly life on Sunday, May 1, 2005, to enter into eternal rest with her heavenly father, causing great sorrow and loss to her family and friends; and

     WHEREAS, having spent her childhood at military stations in London, England; McLean, Virginia; Charleston, South Carolina; and Port Hueneme, California, before returning to her parents' hometown of Macon, Mississippi, in 1973, Mrs. Salter was a 1977 graduate of Central Academy in Macon and earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration at the University of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, an enthusiastic athlete who enjoyed a wide array of sporting activities, Mrs. Salter was a professional economic developer and marketing analyst, serving as Deputy Director of Economic Development at the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians at the time of her retirement in 1991; and

     WHEREAS, prior to her retirement, Mrs. Salter undertook her final project to develop the initial market analysis and financial projections in order to facilitate the tribe's ability to launch the Pearl River Resort enterprise on the Choctaw Reservation; and

     WHEREAS, a former graduate assistant in the Ole Miss School of Business Administration and former instructor at the Mississippi State University College of Business and Industry, Mrs. Salter was honored in 1993 with the Golden Shovel Award by the Forest Area Chamber of Commerce for distinguished volunteer service; and

     WHEREAS, diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, Mrs. Salter, despite her disability remained active in her community involvements, ever fervent in her commitment to raise funds for the Middle Mississippi Council Girl Scouts of America's HOPE Award in 2002 and the honorary co-chairperson of the group's Jackson Leadership Class in 2003; and

     WHEREAS, possessing a zeal for life and improving the life of others, Mrs. Salter was a member of Forest United Methodist Church, the University of Mississippi Alumni Association, Daughters of the American Revolution, Magna Carta Dames and Colonial Dames, founding member of the "Ladies of the Night" book club and former board member of the Friends of the Jackson Zoo; and

     WHEREAS, a genuine and infectious spirit of loving and giving, Mrs. Salter leaves to cherish the testament of her legacy: her husband of 23 years, Sidney L. Salter; daughter, Katherine B. Foster; mother, Merle Dent Jones; brother, Augustus R. Jones; and a host of other relatives and friends; and

     WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of such an outstanding and spirited individual as Mrs. Salter, whose life brought joy to all:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life of Mrs. Paula Jones Salter and express the deepest sympathy of the Senate to her family and friends upon her passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Sid Salter to cherish on behalf of the family and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
