A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING SARAH DEATHERAGE, 8TH GRADE STUDENT AT IUKA MIDDLE SCHOOL, FOR WINNING THE ELK'S NATIONAL HOOP SHOOT FREE-THROW COMPETITION.
WHEREAS, Sarah Deatherage is an 8th grade student at Iuka Middle School. Her parents are Jeff and Beth Deatherage of Iuka, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, the Elk's Club sponsors the "Elks National Hoop Shoot Free-Throw Competition" annually. Each contestant shoots 25 free throws and the person with the highest percentage of made free throws wins; and
WHEREAS, Sarah competed in the 12-13 year old girls division. She won the local competition, the state competition, the regional competition and ultimately the national competition, which was held at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, on April 23, 2005; and
WHEREAS, at the national competition, Sarah made 24 of 25 free throws against 11 other regional winners from across the country; and
WHEREAS, Sarah is the first champion ever from the State of Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, she was awarded a $10,000.00 scholarship to the college of her choice, and her name will be engraved on a plaque and placed in the Basketball Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, it is with pride that we recognize this very special accomplishment by a young Mississippian who has brought honor to her school, her community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Sarah Deatherage, an 8th Grade student at Iuka Middle School, for winning the Elk's Club National Hoop Shoot Free-Throw Competition and for being the first national champion from the State of Mississippi, and extend to her and her family the best wishes of the Legislature on her future athletic and scholastic endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Sarah, Mr. & Mrs. Jeff Deatherage, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
