House Resolution 11

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE BRAVERY OF AMBER SCOTT IN REMAINING CALM AND ESCAPING HER ASSAILANTS AND KIDNAPPERS ON MAY 10, 2005.

WHEREAS, on May 10, 2005, at approximately 10:36 p.m., Amber Scott was assaulted and taken from her 896 Monterey Street residence after two intruders forced an entry into the home demanding money; and

WHEREAS, after assaulting her mother, Chiquita Scott, and aunt, Ericka Scott, Amber was shot twice by the intruders and subsequently forced out of the residence; and

WHEREAS, fearing the worst, Amber, in excruciating pain, began fighting and struggling with her abductors, suffering multiple broken fingers during the altercation; and

WHEREAS, managing to escape her assailants, Amber ran into a wooded area, where she remained until she felt it was safe to exit  in order to seek help; and

WHEREAS, Amber walked to 920 Sumac Drive to get help, but upon not getting a response, she entered an unlocked car at the residence and remained there overnight until approximately 6:00 a.m., when a second attempt to get assistance from the residence proved beneficial; and

WHEREAS, Amber's attack and abduction initiated the State of Mississippi's first use of the AMBER Alert System, to notify the residents of the state of a missing or abducted child; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend Amber Scott's bravery and ability to maintain her self-composure during these unfortunate series of events, which could have ended in a more dangerous manner:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Amber Scott in braving her abductors and reaching a safe haven until emergency assistance could be rendered, and also commend the local law enforcement agencies which responded timely to issue an effective call for usage of the AMBER Alert System.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Amber Scott, the Jackson Police Department and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
