A RESOLUTION COMMENDING JOE TAYLOR FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI AND WISHING HIM WELL UPON HIS RETIREMENT.
WHEREAS, Joe Taylor, of the Mississippi House of Representatives, is completing 17 years of consecutive service as a member of the House from District 86, which includes Clarke, Perry and Wayne Counties; and
WHEREAS, born on December 24, 1942, in Copeland, Alabama, Representative Taylor attended Millry High School, Jones Junior College and Commonwealth College of Mortuary Science before beginning his career as a public servant in 1979 when he was elected Wayne County Coroner; and
WHEREAS, Representative Taylor has worked for Freeman Funeral Home since August 1960, and upon the completion of the Mississippi Law Enforcement Training Academy, subsequently served as assistant chief of police in Waynesboro for 17 years; and
WHEREAS, the talents and ability of Joe Taylor were recognized by the legislative leadership as evidenced by his rising from freshman lawmaker to serve as Vice Chairman of the House Management and Rules Committee, in addition to serving or having served on the Appropriations, Agriculture, Constitution, Enrolled Bills, Ethics, Fees and Salaries of Public Officers, Judiciary A, Military Affairs, Oil, Gas and Other Minerals, Public Buildings, Grounds and Lands, Tourism, Transportation and Ways and Means Committees; and
WHEREAS, known by his colleagues as an able and dedicated legislator who has effectively represented the citizens of his district and state, Representative Taylor was honored by the Mississippi Sheriff's Association as the 1989-1990 Outstanding Legislator of the Year and by the Mississippi Chief's Association as Outstanding Representative of the Year in 2003; and
WHEREAS, Representative Taylor's leadership abilities have been recognized by his colleagues and his constituents, who on Tuesday, May 3, 2005, elected him to the Office of Mayor of the City of Waynesboro, which is where he will begin the work of the people on July 5, 2005; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his career as a successful statesman, Representative Taylor has been a faithful member of the Baptist Church, as well as a devoted husband to Mrs. Bobbie Nell Becton Taylor; father of six children, Rachelle, Rhonda, Stephen, Lance, Tracey and Steven; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren, who have supported him in all of his endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Representative Taylor has indicated that pursuant to his taking the oath of office of mayor, he will retire and the members of the Mississippi Legislature wish to express their sincere appreciation to him for his dedicated service to the people of the State of Mississippi and for the personal sacrifices that he has made on their behalf:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, That we do hereby commend our friend and colleague, Joe Taylor, for all that he has meant to the Mississippi State Legislature and for his unmatched contributions to the people of the State of Mississippi, and we want him to know that his presence and his leadership will be greatly missed by this legislative body.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Representative Joe Taylor and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
