House Concurrent Resolution 4

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION LENDING LEGISLATIVE SUPPORT TO THE NAMING OF THE 154TH REGIMENT (RTI) ADMINISTRATION BUILDING IN MEMORY OF 2ND LIEUTENANT MATTHEW R. STOVALL FOR THE SACRIFICE OF LIFE HEROICALLY GIVEN IN DEFENSE OF THE DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM OF THESE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, it is without reserve that the Legislature of the State of Mississippi lends its support in memorializing the valor and sacrifice of 2nd Lieutenant Matthew R. Stovall, its first native son to lose his life in battle during combat operations in Mosul, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, by naming the 154th Regiment (RTI) Administration Building at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, in his memory; and

     WHEREAS, a graduate of the June 2001 class 43 of the Mississippi Army National Guard Officer Candidate School (OCS), 2nd Lieutenant Stovall was assigned to the Mississippi Army National Guard 367th Maintenance Company, 298th Battalion in Philadelphia, Mississippi, and was killed in action when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle, becoming the first OCS graduate to lose his life in action; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to pay homage to our fallen soldiers, such as 2nd Lieutenant Stovall, who so diligently and valiantly gave his life in battle for the protection of our freedoms and security provided to us as citizens of a democratic nation:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby express our support of the memorial naming of the 154th Regiment (RTI) Administration Building at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, after 2nd Lieutenant Matthew R. Stovall.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Harold A. Cross, Adjutant General of the Mississippi National Guard, the commanding officers of Camp Shelby and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
