AMENDMENT NO 5 TO COMMITTEE AMENDMENT NO 1 PROPOSED TO
Senate Bill No. 2504

AMEND after Line 3395 by inserting the following new section and renumbering each succeeding section: "SECTION 32. Beginning with the 2005-2006 school year, any student in Grades 7 through 12 enrolled in a public school of this state shall not participate in any athletic program unless that student maintains at least a 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The academic rules for students participating in athletic activities are as follows:
(a) At the end of each semester, the student must have maintained at least a 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale with no more than one (1) failing grade.
(b) Any student that does not maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale shall be placed on probation status for the next semester. Any student that has two (2) consecutive semesters with a grade point average of less than 2.0 shall be ineligible for athletic participation until such time as the student completes a semester and retains at least a 2.0 grade point average.
(c) Students suspended from school are ineligible for participation in extracurricular activities or practice during the period of suspension.
(d) The local school board shall establish a procedure for monitoring a student's eligibility including setting dates for eligibility checks and probation weeks.
AMEND FURTHER the Title by inserting the following after the semicolon on Line 87: "AN ACT TO PROVIDE THAT ANY STUDENT IN GRADES SEVEN THROUGH TWELVE ENROLLED IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL IN MISSISSIPPI SHALL NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANY ATHLETIC PROGRAM UNLESS THAT STUDENT MAINTAINS AT LEAST A 2.0 GRADE POINT AVERAGE;"
