Senate Resolution 28

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING ANIKA MITCHELL PERKINS, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS, MISSISSIPPI UNIVERSITY FOR WOMEN, FOR EDUCATIONAL AND CIVIC CONTRIBUTIONS.

WHEREAS, Anika Mitchell Perkins, Director of Public Affairs, Mississippi University for Women (MUW), was nominated to the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning for commendation in recognition of Black History Month; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Perkinsreceived her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with concentration in Public Relations from Mississippi University for Women; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Perkinshas worked at The Commercial Dispatch in Columbus, Mississippi, as Staff Writer and News Editor. In 1999, she joined the staff of Mississippi University for Women as Public Affairs Director; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Perkinsis an advisor for Coretta Social Club, established on MUW's campus in 1968 in honor of Coretta Scott King—the club that fosters education, unity and leadership; on-site advisor and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the oldest Greek-letter organization established in the United States by black college women; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Perkins' civic and community involvements include Habitat for Humanity board member; EKA Nobel Community Awareness Panel; Town and Tower Club member; member of Southside M.B. Church and Welcome Committee; and former board member of Boys and Girls Club; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Perkins' campus involvement include Administrative Council member, Director's Council; Co-Chair of the Information Technology Resources and Systems Committee for SACS, and Presidential Search Committee in 2002; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Perkins'honors include 2002 Public Relations Association of Mississippi Practitioner of the Year, recipient of the 2001-2002 Virginia Carter Smith Scholarship by CASE; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Perkins'professional memberships and activities include member of Public Relations Association of Mississippi and former member of National Association of Black Journalists:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we take pride in recognizing Anika Mitchell Perkins, Director of Public Affairs, Mississippi University for Women, in observance of Black History Month for her contributions to diversity at Mississippi University for Women and in the community.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Ms. Perkins in recognition of her commitment to higher education, be forwarded to the President of Mississippi University for Women and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
