A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE OF FORMER SENATE ATTORNEY LINDA CAROL SLADE OF MERIDIAN AND DIAMONDHEAD, MISSISSIPPI, AND EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE LEGISLATURE.
WHEREAS, former Mississippi State Senate Attorney Linda Carol Slade passed away on Thursday, February 17, 2005; and
WHEREAS, she was born in Meridian, Mississippi, in 1956, and was educated in the Meridian school system, graduating with honors from Meridian High School in 1974. She was a lifelong member of Central United Methodist Church. She attended Meridian Junior College and graduated Magna Cum Laude, majoring in Political Science and Journalism from her beloved Ole Miss in 1978. While at Ole Miss, she was an officer of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. She graduated from the Ole Miss Law School in 1981, where she was a member of the Moot Court Board and Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity. During college, she worked as a part-time Journalist for The Meridian Star; and
WHEREAS, she worked as Staff Attorney with the Mississippi State Senate from 1982-1983, and was a Legislative Assistant for then U.S. Congressman Trent Lott in Washington, D.C. She then became Senator Thad Cochran's Senior Legislative Assistant until 1989, when she became Congressional Liaison and Staff Council for NASA at the Stennis Space Center; and
WHEREAS, in 2000, she was awarded the Exceptional Service Medal, one of NASA's most prestigious awards for exemplary service, as well as various Special Act and Service Awards each year between 1999 and 2004; and
WHEREAS, she was active as an Alumnae of Ole Miss and was a past President of the Washington, D.C. Chapter of the Alumni Association. She enjoyed reading, science, politics, traveling with her parents and the activities of her nieces, nephews and god-daughter; and
WHEREAS, survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.E. "Buddy" Slade, Jr., of Meridian; a sister, Susan Slade Beckham, and her husband, Glenn, of Greenwood; a brother, Steven D. Slade, and his wife, Shelby, of Meridian; nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of a dedicated public employee and friend, whose contributions to the Mississippi Legislature, the United States Congress and the NASA Space Center are a matter of record:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we hereby commend the life of former Senate Attorney Linda Carol Slade of Meridian and Diamondhead, Mississippi, and express to her surviving family the sympathy of the Legislature on her passing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Linda Slade and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
