House Resolution 107

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE, CAREER AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF LONGTIME EDUCATOR, JOHNNY HENDRIX, AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.

     WHEREAS, Johnny Hendrix, a retired vocational counselor at the Leflore County Vo-Tech Center, departed this earthly life on Thursday, March 24, 2005, at the age of 60, to enter into eternal rest, causing great sorrow and loss to his family and friends; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Hendrix began his formal education in the Leflore County public schools, graduating from Amanda Elzy High School in 1963, advancing to higher education and obtaining a bachelor of science degree in business education from Mississippi Valley State University in 1968 and a master of education degree from Delta State University in 1971; and

     WHEREAS, employed by the Leflore County School District for 37 years, Mr. Hendrix worked as a secretary/business teacher at Wilkins School in Money and as a counselor at R.B. Schlater School in Schlater, Leflore County High School, Amanda Elzy High School and the Leflore County Vo-Tech Center; and

     WHEREAS, he was an active member of the Mississippi Teachers' Association, Mississippi Association of Educators, National Education Association, Leflore County Teachers' Association, Mississippi Counselors' Association and Mississippi Vocational Counselors' Association; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Hendrix was a dedicated and upstanding member of Jennings Temple C.M.E. Church, where he served in many capacities over the years including recording steward, trustee, secretary to the Trustee Board, assistant teacher for the adult Sunday School class, president of the male choir, and member of the Lay Council and Board of Christian Education; and

     WHEREAS, honored for his talents as an educator and for his unselfish community contributions, Mr. Hendrix was named Vocational Educator of the Month in 1994, Leflore County Vocational Center Educator of the Year in 1998, received the Outstanding Service to Greenwood-Leflore Communities in Schools Award in 1997, the Excellence in Service Award from the Leflore County Retired Teachers' Association in 1996, Outstanding Service Awards from the Salvation Army Board and Jennings Temple C.M.E. Church and the Outstanding Layman Award from the Mississippi South Conference of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in 2001; and

     WHEREAS, having created a rich legacy in life, love, spiritual and Christian counsel, Mr. Hendrix leaves to cherish his memory:  one sister, Theodra Hendrix; two brothers, M.L. Hendrix and J.P. Carter; many other relatives, friends and acquaintances; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend such individuals as Mr. Hendrix, whose life was an inspiration to all with whom he came in contact:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life of Johnny Hendrix and express deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mr. Johnny Hendrix and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
