House Resolution 62

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE DURANT HIGH SCHOOL TIGERS BASKETBALL TEAM FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING SEASON OF PLAY FOR 2004-2005 AND WINNING THE CLASS 1A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the Durant High School Tigers Basketball Team finished the 2004-2005 season with an impressive record of 28-2, winning the Mississippi High School Activity Association (MHSAA) Class 1A State Championship; and

WHEREAS, the Tigers clinched the MHSAA Class 1A title after defeating Hickory Flat by a score of 81-46, bringing additional honor to the team which had also won the South State 1A Championship; and

WHEREAS, with this year's championship win, the Tigers have ended a ten-year gap to add to their other coveted state titles, for three consecutive years in 1993, 1994 and 1995 as well as the 1972 title; and

WHEREAS, the Tigers have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Johnny Bankhead and Assistant Coaches Lisa Haynes and Joe Garrett, who have broadened the players knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

WHEREAS, a self-disciplined and self-motivated team, the Tigers have been supported in their athletic endeavors and can attribute much of their success to the many parents, fans and supporters whose moral and spiritual encouragement have remained fervent throughout the season; and

WHEREAS, they have developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches and bring honor to Durant High School; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Durant High School Tigers Basketball Team and their coaches for their phenomenal 2004-2005 season, for winning the MHSAA Class 1A Championship and for displaying tireless devotion to their athletic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Durant High School, Head Coach Johnny Bankhead, Assistant Coaches Lisa Haynes and Joe Garrett and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
