A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MARSHALL HOLLIS OF RIPLEY, MISSISSIPPI, FOR RECEIVING THE VENTURING LEADERSHIP AWARD FOR THE SOUTHERN REGION OF THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA.
WHEREAS, Marshall Hollis of Ripley, Mississippi, recently received the Venturing Leadership Award for the Southern Region of the Boy Scouts of America on May 20, 2004; and
WHEREAS, this is the highest honor for a volunteer in the Venturing Program, which is an advanced, high-energy program for boys and girls ages 14-20; and
WHEREAS, Marshall has been involved in Scouting since he was 12 years old; and
WHEREAS, his Scouting achievements include serving on the Executive Board for Yocona Area Council, Boy Scouts of America Regional Board member, Climbing and C.O.P.E. (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience) Course Director at Camp Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimmaron, New Mexico, a Vigil member in the Order of Arrow and a past lodge advisor for Chickasaw Lodge 202, a member of the Inter-American Scout Committee (covering North and South America), International Secretary for Scouting Rotarians (an organization for Scouts who are members of Rotary); and
WHEREAS, Scouting has taken Hollis around the world. He received his certificate as a member of the World Scout Foundation from King Carl Gustav XVI of Sweden; and
WHEREAS, Marshall is a Pharmacist and has served on the pharmacy staff for 7 National Scout Jamborees, and will serve as Director of Pharmacy Services for the 2005 Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill near Richmond, Virginia. He has also served on the pharmacy staff for two World Jamborees, one in Santiago, Chile, and one in Bangkok, Thailand. This summer he will serve as Climbing Director for the National Order of Arrow Conference at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa; and
WHEREAS, for every 100 boys who join a Boy Scout troop: 12 will have their first contact with a church; 1 will enter the clergy; 8 will enter a career that was learned through the merit badge system; 1 will use his Boy Scout skills to save a life; 1 will use his Boy Scout skills to save his own life; 17 will become scouting volunteers; and 2 will become Eagle Scouts; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this Mississippian, whose dedication to the traditions of Scouting, determination, leadership and community service demonstrate a dedication to state and national citizenship and patriotism:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Marshall Hollis of Ripley, Mississippi, upon his receipt of the Venturing Leadership Award for the Southern Region of the Boy Scouts of America, the highest honor for a volunteer in Scouting, and wish him continued success in his future scouting and civic service endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Marshall Hollis and his family and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
