A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MURRAH HIGH SCHOOL "LADY MUSTANGS" SENIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL STAR, DIAMOND ROGERS, "ALL-METRO PLAYER OF THE YEAR."
WHEREAS, Murrah High School "Lady Mustangs" Senior Guard finished with a tremendous 2003-2004 season and has been named the "Player of the Year" on The Clarion-Ledger's All-Metro Girls Basketball Team; and
WHEREAS, Diamond Rogers, a 5-foot-11 Guard, averaged 22.4 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 3 assists and led Murrah to a Class 5A runner-up finish. She helped the Lady Mustangs to 5A state titles as a sophomore and junior; and
WHEREAS, Diamond Rogers' basketball success should not surprise anyone who knows her family. Bonnie and Henry Rogers' three girls - Tamika, Raven and Diamond - are members of possibly the most successful girls basketball family in Mississippi history. The girls were named to The Clarion-Ledger's prestigious "Dandy Dozen" list of the state's top players. Combined, the three were part of five state championship teams; and
WHEREAS, Diamond Rogers' mother, Bonnie Rogers said that Diamond wanted to be a cheerleader when she was real young, but she started following her sister, Raven, around, and became a basketball force during her high school career; and
WHEREAS, a very humble person, Diamond Rogers was almost apologetic when told about the award. "I really don't know what to say," Rogers said. "I had some good teammates and we worked together"; and
WHEREAS, although Diamond Rogers was quieter than her sisters, she became a leader for Murrah this season. "She is more passive than Tamika or Raven," said Murrah Coach Anna Jackson, who coached all three Rogers girls. Diamond let her actions speak. The other seniors on the team depended on her"; and
WHEREAS, in her junior year, Rogers led Murrah to the 2003 State Class 5A Championship; and
WHEREAS, Diamond Rogers, an Alabama-Birmingham signee, is a mixture of her sisters, in basketball skills and personality; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the outstanding accomplishments of this student-athlete, who has brought honor to her school, her community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Murrah High School "Lady Mustangs" Senior Girls Basketball Star, Diamond Rogers, The Clarion-Ledger's "All-Metro Player of the Year," and extend to her and her family the best wishes of the Senate on her future athletic and academic career.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Diamond Rogers and her family, be forwarded to the Principal of Murrah High School and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
