Senate Concurrent Resolution 616

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE OF MRS. ALLEN HOBBS CAPPS OF CLEVELAND, MISSISSIPPI, AND EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE LEGISLATURE.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Allen Hobbs Capps of Cleveland, Mississippi, passed away on Saturday, April 17, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Capps, the wife of our longtime friend, Representative Charles "Charlie" Capps, will be remembered by all members of the Legislature as a true southern lady excelling in patience and virtue; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Capps was born on June 17, 1927, in Greenwood, Mississippi, to Allen Melton Hobbs and Inda Doyle Hobbs. She graduated from Greenwood High School, attended Sweet Briar College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Math from the University of Mississippi. While at the University of Mississippi, she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and a past member of the Chi Omega House Board. She married Charles Wilson Capps, Jr., on May 28, 1949, in Greenwood, Mississippi. She was a member of the Delta Home and Garden Club, Thursday Bridge Club and the First United Methodist Church, where she was Chairperson of Circle 2 and a past President of the First United Methodist Women and past member of the administration board and former Superintendent of Sunday School. Mrs. Capps was a life member of the Junior Auxiliary and charter member of the Bologna Arts Foundation Board and was also active in several of its committees; and

WHEREAS, survivors include her husband, Charles Wilson Capps, Jr.; a son, Charles Wilson Capps, III; two daughters, Alinda Capps Sledge (all of Cleveland) and Margaret Capps Allen (of Greenwood); and eight grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of this great lady who has meant so much to her family, her community and to the Legislature:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life and charitable service of Mrs. Allen Hobbs Capps of Cleveland, Mississippi, and express to her surviving family the sympathy of the Legislature on her passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Representatives Capps and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
