A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING JOHNNY BREWER, TALENTED END FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP OLE MISS REBEL FOOTBALL TEAMS AND IN THE NFL, UPON HIS INDUCTION INTO THE MISSISSIPPI SPORTS HALL OF FAME, CLASS OF 2004.
WHEREAS, the Jackson Touchdown Club and Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame has unveiled the Class of 2004 of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, which features Johnny Brewer, talented All-American end from Redwood, Mississippi, who played for championship Ole Miss Rebel football teams and in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints; and
WHEREAS, Johnny Brewer earned 15 letters in football (5), basketball (4), baseball (3) and track (3) at Redwood High School. He was a two-way end for Ole Miss, who lettered in 1957, 1959 and 1960; a member of two National Champion Rebel teams in 1959 and 1960; he helped Ole Miss compile a record of 38-3-2 during his college career; and has the distinction of playing in three Sugar Bowls; and
WHEREAS, he was named First Team All SEC in his junior and senior seasons and was selected All-South and First Team All-America by Kodak & ABC following the 1960 season; he was selected as SEC's Most Valuable Lineman in 1959 and 1960 and played in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, the Coaches Association All-America game in Buffalo, New York, and the Chicago College All-Star game; and
WHEREAS, Johnny was a third-round draft choice in 1959 as a junior and a fourth-round draft choice, 41st pick overall, by the Cleveland Browns in the 1960 NFL Draft and he was also drafted by the CFL's Edmonton Eskimos and the AFL Oakland Raiders; and
WHEREAS, he played tight end, linebacker and defensive end in the NFL for 10 seasons from 1961-1970. He was named to the All Pro Rookie Team and selected to play in the 1966 Pro Bowl and was a member of the 1964 NFL Championship Cleveland Team that blanked the Baltimore Colts and Johnny Unitas by a 27-0 score. He also played in the 1965 NFL championship game against the Green Bay Packers; and
WHEREAS, after 7 seasons with Cleveland, he was traded to the New Orleans Saints, where he completed his pro career; remarkably, he never missed a regular season NFL game; and
WHEREAS, he cultivated a successful insurance business during his off-seasons and now resides in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and was inducted into the Ole Miss Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this outstanding athlete who has brought honor to his community, his university and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Johnny Brewer, talented end for the Championship Ole Miss Rebel football teams of the 1960's and in the NFL, upon his induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, Class of 2004, and wish him and his family continued success in all their future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Johnny Brewer at induction ceremonies, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
