Senate Concurrent Resolution 561

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND PUBLIC SERVICE OF GLOSTER ALDERMAN AND FIRE COMMISSIONER ELLIOT DAVIS, JR., AND EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE LEGISLATURE.

WHEREAS, Gloster Alderman and Fire Commissioner Elliot Davis, Jr., 51 years of age, died in a fire truck accident while en route to a fire on February 22, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Alderman Davis was driving the town-owned fire truck when the wreck occurred, about seven miles southeast of Gloster, Mississippi, while responding to a grass fire; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Davis was born on April 3, 1952, in Amite County, Mississippi. He was the son of Elliot Davis, Sr. and Lizzie Weathersby Davis of Gloster, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, he worked with the Amite County School District, and had previously worked at Georgia Pacific in Gloster, Mississippi until it closed in 2002. He was an Alderman in Gloster Ward Five since 1993, and Fire Commissioner in charge of the town fire and ambulance departments; and

WHEREAS, Alderman Davis was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church where he served on the Finance Committee. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Ezra Lodge Number 526, Father Joshua of the Palace of Children, and a member of Gloster Heroines of Jericho. He was a board member of Amite County Medical Services. His family said he was kind and cared about the needs of others; and

WHEREAS, he was a graduate of Amite County Training School in Gloster, Mississippi and attended Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, survivors include his wife, Racheal Perry Davis of Gloster, Mississippi; four sons, Lancinie A. Davis of Jackson, Mississippi, Elliot Davis III and Jeremy Davis, both of Gloster, Mississippi, and Rozario D. Davis of Liberty, Mississippi; one daughter, Vanassa S. Davis of Gloster, Mississippi; two grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends; and

WHEREAS, Elliot cared about his ward and his city, and is going to be missed by the community:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life and public service of Gloster Alderman and Fire Commissioner Elliot Davis, Jr., and express to his surviving family the sympathy of the Legislature on his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented Mrs. Racheal Perry Davis and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
