AN ACT TO AUTHORIZE THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GULFPORT, MISSISSIPPI, AND THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF HARRISON COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, TO INCREASE THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AT GULFPORT FROM SEVEN TRUSTEES TO NINE TRUSTEES; TO PROVIDE THAT TWO OF THE NEW TRUSTEES SHALL BE EITHER AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE MEDICAL STAFF OF THE HOSPITAL OR A FORMER ACTIVE MEMBER ON THE HONORARY STAFF OF THE MEDICAL STAFF OF THE HOSPITAL; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  (1)  The City Council of the City of Gulfport, Mississippi, and the Board of Supervisors of Harrison County, Mississippi, in their discretion, may increase the membership of the Board of Trustees of Memorial Hospital at Gulfport from seven (7) trustees to nine (9) trustees, and shall appoint the trustees as provided in this act.

     (2)  If the City Council of the City of Gulfport and the Board of Supervisors of Harrison County increase the membership of the Board of Trustees of Memorial Hospital at Gulfport to nine (9) trustees, three (3) of the trustees shall be appointed by the city council, three (3) of the trustees shall be appointed by the board of supervisors, acting for and on behalf of the Gulfport-West Harrison County Hospital District, and three (3) of the trustees shall be appointed jointly by the city council and the board of supervisors, with two (2) of the jointly appointed trustees being either an active member of the Medical Staff of Memorial Hospital at Gulfport or a former active member on the Honorary Staff of the Medical Staff of Memorial Hospital at Gulfport.

     (3)  The terms of the members of the Board of Trustees of Memorial Hospital at Gulfport serving on the effective date of this act shall not be affected by this act.  The initial terms of the two (2) new trustees shall be set by resolutions of the city council and the board of supervisors so that the terms of not more than two (2) members of the board of trustees will expire in the same year.  After the expiration of the initial terms of the two (2) new trustees, and after the expiration of the terms of the current members of the board of trustees, all succeeding trustees shall serve for terms of five (5) years.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
