A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY OF THE PARTICIPATION OF HINDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN THE 1954 JUNIOR ROSE BOWL IN PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
WHEREAS, Hinds Community College was previously known as Hinds Junior College; and
WHEREAS, in 2004, Hinds Community College observes the half-century anniversary of its proudest athletic hour; and
WHEREAS, under the auspice of the late Hinds Junior College President, George McLendon, and under the athletic leadership of the late Coach Joe Renfroe, the 1954 Eagles football team earned eligibility and support to compete in a national championship game; and
WHEREAS, the 1954 Hinds Junior College athletic department, comprised of Eagles football players, cheerleaders, band members, and hi-steppers, participated in the Junior Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California; and
WHEREAS, the entire Hinds Junior College contingent, including students and employees, conducted their attendance as true champions bringing national honor and admiration to the college and to the State of Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, this event in the history of Hinds Junior College, now known as Hinds Community College, has remained the touchstone for Eagles of its proudest athletic hour; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the remarkable sportsmanship of the young people of our state, who are its future:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we recognize the Golden Anniversary of the participation of Hinds Community College in the 1954 Junior Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, this prime contribution to the state and to Hinds Community College.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Hinds Community College District and members of the Capitol Press Corps.
