A RESOLUTION COMMENDING SUSAN NYCOLE LONG ON HER RECENT SELECTION AS A WINNER OF THE MUTUAL OF OMAHA ESSAY CONTEST.
WHEREAS, Susan Nycole Long, a fifth grade honor student attending South Pontotoc Elementary School, was recently chosen as the overall state winner in the Mutual of Omaha Essay Contest held in November 2003; and
WHEREAS, the daughter of Dennis and Jeanie Long, sister of Stephanie and Kody, and granddaughter of Julius and Wilma Stahl of Pontotoc, Mississippi, Emmer Jean Long of Troy, Mississippi, and the late Ruble Long, Susan, who enjoys reading and being with friends, was also one of 13 state winners in the "Conserving Energy" art contest in November 2003; and
WHEREAS, seeking to tap in on the natural creativity of today's youth as a means of proving that kids can make a difference in efforts of preserving our natural world, Mutual of Omaha encouraged kids ages nine through twelve to write a one-page essay explaining their idea for saving an endangered species; and
WHEREAS, Susan's winning essay, "The Barking Squirrel," which expounds on a means of preserving the Black-tailed Prairie Dogs, was chosen out of countless thousands submitted throughout the state and nation; and
WHEREAS, as a winning entrant, Susan will be afforded the opportunity to present her conservation ideas to her peers at the Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom Kids' Summit in San Diego, California, on May 5-7, 2004; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence in the youth of our state, who are its future:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Susan Nycole Long on her recent selection as the overall state winner in the Mutual of Omaha Essay Contest and extend our heartiest wishes for success in all her future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Susan Nycole Long and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
