House Resolution 70

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MICHAEL LAMAR NEWMAN ON ACHIEVING THE HONOR OF THE EAGLE SCOUT AWARD.

     WHEREAS, Michael Lamar Newman of Soso, Mississippi, recently completed the requirements to attain the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) program; and

     WHEREAS, the 17-year-old son of Vernon and Tammie Newman and older brother of Morgan Newman, Michael is member of BSA Troop 48 sponsored by the Lebanon Baptist Church of the Lebanon Community; and

     WHEREAS, Michael began his scouting experience in 1993 as a Cub Scout, advancing through the Bear, Wolf and Webelos ranks; achieving the Arrow of Light Award in 1997, entering the BSA in 1998 and earning the required merit badges to fulfill his duties and obligations of maintaining and promoting the mission and vision of the Boy Scouts of America; and

     WHEREAS, Michael has served his BSA troop as senior patrol leader, patrol leader, librarian, chaplain and was selected to serve in the BSA "Order of the Arrow" in 2000, where he served as assistant chief and chief; and

     WHEREAS, adhering to the Scout Oath and abiding by the Scout Law, Michael was able to earn this coveted honor by advancing his knowledge, leadership skills, organizational skills, hours of community service, as well as support from the community, peers and family; and

     WHEREAS, a junior at West Jones High School, Michael is active in various organizations, including the award winning show choirs, "Center Stage" and "Imagination," the Key Club, "Teens Getting Involved in the Future (TGIF)," the Geography Society, the National Beta Club and the Teenage Republicans; and

     WHEREAS, in conjunction with his scout tasks, Michael is enrolled in the Allied Health Program at West Jones High School, and is a member of its Health Occupations Student of America (HOSA) organization, wherein he competed in the Veterinarian Assisting Competition, placing second in the Mississippi Southern Region and first in the Mississippi State Competitions, securing Mississippi's representation at the National HOSA Competition in Orlando, Florida, in June; and

     WHEREAS, a member of Big Creek Baptist Church, Michael is active in the Youth Group and Choir, has served as Vacation Bible School teacher, Children's Church attendant and Sunday School teacher; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the young people of our state, who are its future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Michael Lamar Newman on achieving the honor of the Eagle Scout Award and wish to express our heartiest wishes for success in all his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Michael Lamar Newman and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
