A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF JACK E. HARPER, JR., AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.
WHEREAS, Jack E. Harper, Jr., of Indianola, Mississippi, departed this earthly life on Thursday, January 1, 2004, causing great sorrow and loss to his family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Harper, a graduate of Sunflower Community College, received his bachelor of laws and juris doctorate degrees from the University of Mississippi and began the practice of law in Indianola before his election as Chancery Clerk of Sunflower County; and
WHEREAS, he served in the United States Marine Corps as an officer in the Pacific Theater during World War II and in the Mississippi Army National Guard during the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, having a rich history of service, Mr. Harper served as Chancery Clerk of Sunflower County for 44 years before his retirement in 2000, yet he continued to remain active in and throughout the Indianola community and was named the Morris Lewis, Jr., Citizen of the Year; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Harper was involved in a vast array of organizations, including having served as President of the Sunflower County Bar Association, Commander of the Indianola American Legion and VFW Posts, President of Mississippi Chancery Clerk's Association, Lions Club, Indianola Chamber of Commerce, board member for Mississippi Delta Community College, and the Delta Area Council-Boy Scouts of America, in addition to others; and
WHEREAS, a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday School superintendent for a number of years, Mr. Harper will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him best, including, his wife, Rose Oliver Harper; daughter, Semonne Harper Strawbridge; sons, Jack E. Harper III, Robert Harris Harper, Dr. William Bransford Harper; and four grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend the lives of such outstanding Mississippians as Mr. Harper, whose meritorious contributions made a profound impact on the lives of the many citizens of Indianola:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life and accomplishments of Mr. Jack E. Harper, Jr., and extend deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mr. Harper and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
