A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION FOR SPONSORING THE "GO RED FOR WOMEN" CAMPAIGN TO PROMOTE WOMEN'S HEALTH IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE.
WHEREAS, there are 1.5 million women residing in the State of Mississippi and cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women; and
WHEREAS, cardiovascular disease causes more than 5,200 women to die in Mississippi each year; and
WHEREAS, in addition to cardiovascular disease, almost 1,200 women die from stroke annually; and
WHEREAS, although one in three women die of heart disease and one in five females have some form of heart or blood vessel disease, only about a third of women know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women; and
WHEREAS, women over the age of fifty-five are at a higher risk for high blood pressure than men; and
WHEREAS, fifty-four percent of women in Mississippi are overweight or obese which are leading risk factors for cardiovascular disease; and
WHEREAS, because all women need to ask their doctor about their risk of heart disease and stroke, the American Heart Association invites women to take charge of their health by making it a top priority; and
WHEREAS, to encourage women to live a stronger, longer, healthier life, the American Heart Association sponsors the "Go Red for Women" campaign to fight cardiovascular disease in women:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the American Heart Association for promoting women's health and well-being in Mississippi and proclaim February 6, 2004, to be "Go Red for Women Day" in Mississippi to honor our wives, mothers and daughters of this great state.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the American Heart Association and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
