A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION EXPRESSING OUR SORROW, CONDOLENCES AND RESPECT TO THE CITIZENS OF SPAIN AND SHARING THEIR OUTRAGE CONCERNING THE TRAGIC TERRORIST BOMBING IN MADRID.
WHEREAS, on March 11, 2004, the world was once again shaken by the ruthless, vile and inhumane acts of terrorists in the city of Madrid, Spain; and
WHEREAS, these heinous and horrific attacks, which ricocheted throughout Madrid with calculated precision, constituted the deadliest of its kind in Spain's history, claiming more than 200 innocent lives and wounding more than 1,500 others; and
WHEREAS, the diplomatic relationship shared between the United States and Spain is invaluable, and just as the Spanish government has embraced and supported the United States in the fight against terrorism since September 11, 2001, we offer our assurance to the citizens of Spain that we are firmly committed to being a basis of support during this tragic period of distress and pain; and
WHEREAS, sharing the fundamental principals of freedom and democracy, Spain and the United States will not be broken down by the cowardly and insurgent acts of terror; and
WHEREAS, the attempts to shake the very foundation of democracy on which Spain is built, the same foundation that assures freedom and justice to the citizenry of Spain and America, makes us ever more committed to ensuring that those fundamental principles remain in tact for every democratic nation; and
WHEREAS, in expressing our solidarity for how deeply disturbed the citizens of Mississippi are and voicing our profound outrage and sorrow with respect to the dastardly occurrence of events which have befallen Spain; and
WHEREAS, in times of need, as a global community of shared interests, we grow more united, and together we will move forward to ensure that the world's freedom, security and democracy is safeguarded from other such barbarous acts of terrorism; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to express our support and sorrow to fellow democracies which have been injured by the callous and heartless activities of organizations opposed to a democratic community:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby express our sorrow, condolences and respect to the citizens of Spain and share in their outrage concerning the tragic bombing in Madrid.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to King Juan Carlos, President José Luís Rodriguez Zapatero, Spanish Ambassador Javier Ruperez and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
