A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING MISS MONICA JEANYA' MINTER ON BEING SELECTED AS MISSISSIPPI'S MISS HOSPITALITY 2003 AND FOR HER MANY DISTINGUISHED ACCOMPLISHMENTS.
WHEREAS, Miss Monica Jeanya' Minter was selected on July 26, 2003, as Mississippi's Miss Hospitality 2003 to serve as the state's goodwill ambassador in the areas of tourism and economic development; and
WHEREAS, a native of Jackson, Mississippi, Miss Minter made history as the first African-American to be selected as Miss Hospitality in the pageant's 54-year history; and
WHEREAS, Miss Minter, in addition to being the overall winner, won the Speech Award in preliminary competition and the Spirit of Miss Hospitality Award, which is voted on by the contestants for the individual who most exemplifies the qualities of hospitality; and
WHEREAS, as a senior political science major at Jackson State University (JSU), Miss Minter was recently selected by the student body to represent the historically black university as Miss Jackson State University for 2003-2004; and
WHEREAS, Miss Minter, a three-year Dean's List Scholar at JSU, has been active in several organizations such as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Tiger PRIDE Connection, the Pre-Alumni Club, the Political Science Club, the Fannie Lou Hammer Political Society, the NAACP and the University Choir and Chorale; and
WHEREAS, although quite active in school activities, Miss Minter also finds the time to help the community by volunteering in organizations such as the Boys' and Girls' Club and Habitat for Humanity; and
WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Mississippi finds it most appropriate to recognize and commend excellence, especially by a young person, such as Miss Monica J. Minter, who has made outstanding accomplishments that will, in turn, better the great State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we commend Miss Monica Jeanya' Minter on being selected Mississippi's Miss Hospitality 2003 and for her many distinguished accomplishments, and we wish her much success as she serves as the state's goodwill ambassador to promote the tourism industry and economic development.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Miss Monica J. Minter and the Capitol Press Corps.
