A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR DANIEL EAGLES FOR SCORING A PERFECT 36 ON THE ACT.
WHEREAS, Oxford High School Senior Daniel Eagles has pitched the perfect game in academics, a score of 36 on the ACT Assessment; and
WHEREAS, of the 1,116,082 students in the nation who took the test in 2002, only 134 scored the magic number and in the State of Mississippi, only one out of the 13,000 who took the test in October scored a perfect 36; and
WHEREAS, Gary Drukemiller, Superintendent for the Oxford School District, praised Daniel: "People who have taken the ACT or SAT in their career know what a 36 means. He set a standard which will be difficult to achieve"; and
WHEREAS, the ACT is taken by nearly 60% of America's entering college freshmen and consists of tests in English, Mathematics, Reading and Science. Each test is scored on a scale of 1-36, and a student's composite score is the average of the four test scores. The average composite score for the national high school graduating class in 2002 was 20.8. In Mississippi, 84% of graduates were tested and the average composite score was 18.6. Daniel's four scores were a 36 in English, Mathematics and Science and a 34 in Reading; and
WHEREAS, ACT Chief Executive Officer Richard L. Ferguson stated, "Daniel's ACT score indicates that he should have the widest possible range of future educational options from which to choose." Daniel has applied to several Ivy League schools along with Rice University, Northwestern University and Vanderbilt; and
WHEREAS, Daniel's honors and activities are most impressive: National Honor Society President; Mu Alpha Theta; German Club; Delta Epsilon Phi; Chess Club President, 2001-2002; Math and Science Team; Brain Brawl; First Clarinet in Oxford High School Symphonic Band; Band Council; 11th Grade Junior Class Representative; 12th Grade Secretary/Treasurer; Swim Team; named Oxford High School Student of the Year in German I, Honors English II, Honors World History, German III, AP English III, AP United States History and Physics; Charger Award for swimming, 2001; 2nd Place in Short Story Division at 2001 Creative Arts Fair; Outstanding Woodwind Player for Oxford High School Symphonic Band 2000-2001; Outstanding Musician for Oxford High School Symphonic Band 2001-2002; Mississippi All-State Band 7th chair 2001 and 2nd chair 2002; Mississippi All-State Honor Orchestra 1st chair 2002; member of First Place Team in Quiz Bowl Division at 2003 Mississippi Math and Science Competition; member of 2nd Place Team in Computer Programming Division at 2002 Mississippi Math and Science Competition; 1st place in state on Chemistry Examination at 2003 Mississippi Math and Science Competition; 2nd place in state on Physics Examination at 2002 and 2003 Mississippi Math and Science Competitions; National German Exam, first in state and 90th percentile nationwide 2001 and 2002 and 93rd percentile nationwide 2003; selected by the American Association of Teachers of German as one of 38 national recipients of the 2002 Travel-Study Trip Award to Nuremberg (sponsored by the Federal Republic of Germany); U.S. Chemistry Olympiad National Finalist and first in state 2002; Rotary Club Honor Student, fall 2002; 2003 National Merit Finalist; 2003 STAR Student for Oxford High School; and 2003 United States Presidential Scholar Candidate; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the spectacular accomplishments of this student who has brought honor to his school, his community and the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Oxford High School Senior Daniel Eagles for scoring a perfect 36 on the ACT examination and extend to him and his parents, Charles and Brenda, the best wishes of the Senate for success in his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Daniel Eagles and his family, be forwarded to Superintendent Gary Druckemiller and be made available to the Oxford Eagle and the Capitol Press Corps.
