Senate Resolution 100

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE MYRTLE HIGH SCHOOL "LADY HAWKS" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH JOHN SHERMAN FOR WINNING THE CLASS 1A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING 2002-2003 SEASON.

     WHEREAS, the Myrtle High School "Lady Hawks" Girls Basketball Team culminated their outstanding 2002-2003 season by winning the Class 1A State Championship and posting a 37-1 record; and

     WHEREAS, the Lady Hawks competed well in tournament play, winning the following tournaments:  West Union Round Robin Tournament, Myrtle Classic Tournament, Union County Tournament, Division 2-1A Tournament and North State Regional Tournament; and

     WHEREAS, the following team members earned individual honors:  Brittany Robbins (All-Union County, All-Division); Sheena Hall (All-Union County, All-Division, All-North State, All-State Tournament Team; WO7BN TV-7 All-Area Team); Kelly Yates (All-Union County, All-Division, All-North State, All-State Tournament Team, WO7BN TV-7 All-Area Team, M.A.C. 1-A All-State Honorable Mention, was selected to participate in the M.A.C. All-Star Game, New Albany Gazette All-Area Team, signed to play and received a scholarship at Northeast Mississippi Community College), Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal All-Area Team; Armintie Price (The Clarion-Ledger Dandy Dozen, All-Union County, All-Division, All-North State, All-State Tournament Team, chosen to participate in the M.A.C. Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Game, The Clarion-Ledger All-State First Team, M.A.C. 1-A Player of the Year, WO7BN TV-7 Player of the Year, Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal Player of the Year, signed to play and received a scholarship at Ole Miss), set the single-game record for the State Tournament finals by scoring 51 points, and in the semifinals, broke her own record of 41 points by scoring 45 points this year; and

     WHEREAS, the team was superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach John Sherman who emphasized fundamentals and defense in tournament play.  Coach Sherman was chosen by WO7BN TV-7 as "Coach of the Year" and chosen Division 2-1A "Coach of the Year" by the Mississippi Association of Coaches (M.A.C.); and

     WHEREAS, the Lady Hawks have developed a winning attitude and cooperative spirit, and their activities reflect great promise in the lives of Mississippi's youth, and it is with pride that we recognize this championship team which has brought honor to its school, its community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Myrtle High School "Lady Hawks" Girls Basketball Team and Coach John Sherman for winning the Class 1A State Championship and for their outstanding 2002-2003 season and extend to them the best wishes of the Senate for success in their future academic and athletic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the Lady Hawks and Coach Sherman and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
