A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING SUE GUNTER, WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME COACH FROM WALNUT GROVE, MISSISSIPPI, UPON HER INDUCTION INTO THE MISSISSIPPI SPORTS HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2003.
WHEREAS, the Jackson Touchdown Club and Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame has unveiled the Class of 2003 of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, which features Sue Gunter, Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Coach from Walnut Grove, Mississippi, who led teams at Middle Tennessee State, Stephen F. Austin and LSU and is the fourth winningest women's basketball coach in NCAA history; and
WHEREAS, Sue Gunter was a star shooting guard for Walnut Grove High and East Central Community College at Decatur, Mississippi; she attended Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee, where she played for the Nashville Business College AAU team that won two National AAU Tournaments, was named All America guard in 1960 and played for U.S. National Team that played the Soviet Union from 1960-1962; and
WHEREAS, she coached Middle Tennessee State to two unbeaten seasons before launching a 15-year stint at Stephen F. Austin, led the Ladyjacks to four top 20 rankings, four state titles, a regional crown and five AIAW Tournament appearances with a record of 266-87; and
WHEREAS, Sue is an active coach for LSU Lady Tigers, where she has coached for 20 seasons; she has guided LSU women's hoops teams to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, 2 NCAA Elite Eight appearances, 6 Sweet Sixteen appearances, an SEC tournament title, a WNIT championship, she has coached the Lady Tigers to a mark of 385-209 and is the winningest basketball coach in LSU history; and
WHEREAS, overall, her teams have compiled a record of 651 wins with 296 losses in 38 seasons; and
WHEREAS, she was inducted into the East Central Community College Hall of Fame in 2000 and enshrined into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tennessee, on June 10, 2000; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this outstanding athlete who has brought honor to her community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Sue Gunter, Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Coach from Walnut Grove, Mississippi, who is the fourth winningest women's basketball coach in NCAA history, upon her induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2003, and wish her and her family continued success in all their future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Sue Gunter at induction ceremonies to be held on April 4, 2003, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
