A RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE MAY FAMILY OF COPIAH COUNTY ON THE 33RD ANNIVERSARY OF THE MAY FAMILY REUNION.
WHEREAS, on June 29, 2003, the 33rd Anniversary of the May Family Reunion will take place in Jackson, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, the history of the May Family originates from the lineage of Quitman and Melinda May. Quitman was born in 1855 in Copiah County, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, to this union nine children were born: Letha, Marthie, Dan, Hattie, Maybell, Lafayette, Gentlay, Monroe and Lenell; and
WHEREAS, Quitman was a farmer who grew and sold vegetables in Copiah and surrounding counties. Melinda was a housekeeper and farming assistant and mother of nine children. As the May Family celebrates its 33rd annual reunion, we reflect on its origin in Peoria, Illinois, organized by Dan May, Jr., in June of 1970; and
WHEREAS, this year relatives will travel from Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Maryland and Mississippi to celebrate the 33rd annual May Reunion in Jackson, Mississippi, hosted by the Jones Family, fourth generation descendants of Quitman and Melinda; and
WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi is honored to be the site of this annual gathering which reflects on traditional family values and Mississippi's history:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby congratulate the May Family of Copiah County on the occasion of the 33rd Anniversary of the May Family Reunion to be held on June 29, 2003, in Jackson, Mississippi, and we welcome this family again to Mississippi and extend to them the best wishes of the Senate for future success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the May Family and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
