A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE OF MELVIN PHILLIPS AND EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE LEGISLATURE.
WHEREAS, Mr. Melvin Phillips, long-time Financial Aid Director at Tougaloo College and at Jackson State University, passed away on February 4, 2003; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Phillips was the first African-American graduate of Provine High School in 1968, and was a member of the National Honor Society; and
WHEREAS, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Tougaloo College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science/Mathematics in 1972, and from Jackson State University with a Masters of Science Degree in Political Science/Mathematics in 1979; and
WHEREAS, he worked with Congressman Benny Thompson on Rose Street, Jackson, Mississippi, in the 1970's; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Phillips was Financial Aid Director at Tougaloo College, 1973-1985, and Financial Aid Director at Jackson State University, 1985-1995, (retired); and
WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of this influential citizen whose career of public service is a matter of record:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life of Melvin Phillips, long-time Financial Aid Director at Tougaloo College and at Jackson State University, and express the sympathy of the Senate to his family on his passing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Melvin Phillips and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
