House Resolution 10

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF REVEREND LUCIUS BRAINARD MARION, JR., AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.

WHEREAS, Reverend Lucius Brainard Marion, Jr., departed this life on Friday, January 3, 2003, causing great loss to his family and friends; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Marion, a native of Clinton, South Carolina, was born August 14, 1916, to Dr. L. B. Marion and Vashti Fuller Marion; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Marion graduated high school in Atlanta, Georgia, where he later surrendered to the ministry at the age of nineteen; and

WHEREAS, having descended from a Presbyterian family, Reverend Marion was ordained into the Baptist ministry at Pendleton Street Baptist Church in Greenville, South Carolina, on May 30, 1937; and

WHEREAS, in 1939, while pastoring two "half-time" churches, Reverend Marion received his undergraduate degree from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, and graduated from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, with a bachelor of divinity degree in 1943; and

WHEREAS, while attending seminary school, Reverend Marion met Kenna Mildred Caswell, and were later married on June 14, 1941, going on to raise two daughters and two sons; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Marion arrived in Clarksdale, Mississippi, in 1961, preaching his first sermon on May 21, at Clarksdale Baptist Church, where he remained until named pastor emeritus on February 7, 1982; and

WHEREAS, in 1964, Reverend Marion founded Clarksdale Baptist School and served as headmaster thereof from the founding until 1986; and

WHEREAS, having affiliations, memberships and leadership positions with several religious, educational, civic and faith-based organizations and institutions, such as: Brotherhood Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, Baptist Memorial Hospital, Furman University, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Reverend Marion's involvement exhibited his love for Christ and his fellowman; and

WHEREAS, the legacy and memory of Reverend Lucius Brainard Marion, Jr., will forever live on in the lives of all who knew and loved him, particularly his survivors, including: wife, Kenna Marion; daughters, Barbara A. Marion and Carol Marion Fullilove; son, Charles F. Marion; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives of the State of Mississippi to commend outstanding Mississippians such as Reverend Marion, whose positive influence and encouragement will always be remembered:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life and accomplishments of Reverend Lucius Brainard Marion, Jr., and express our deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Reverend Lucius Brainard Marion, Jr., and members of the Capitol Press Corps.
