A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING MS. MARY SPRAYBERRY UPON BEING NAMED THE 2002 MISSISSIPPI NURSES' ASSOCIATION'S NURSE OF THE YEAR.

     WHEREAS, Ms. Mary Sprayberry, a registered nurse, was named the 2002 Mississippi Nurses' Association's Nurse of the Year; and

     WHEREAS, having completed her nursing education at the University Hospital School of Nursing in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1960, Ms. Sprayberry has served as a registered nurse in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology, medical-surgical nurse and acute care nurse; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Sprayberry was the first school nurse at Nettleton Consolidated School System, where she has served for 23 years, and paved the way for improved health care for the students of Lee and Monroe Counties; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Sprayberry applied for a pilot project in the state to place a medical clinic in the Nettleton Consolidated School System and it was one of three sites chosen by the Board of Education and approved by legislation to be involved in the research and pilot program; and

     WHEREAS, the program was called, "Comprehensive Coordinated School Health Pilot Program," and the data, which was presented to the State of Mississippi Legislature in 2001, was found to be statistically valid and has produced positive outcomes for children's health; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Sprayberry has influenced many young people to enter the field of nursing by serving as a positive role model for many high school students; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Sprayberry has been a member of the Mississippi Nurses' Association for 42 years, serving as a charter member of MNA's District 25; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend outstanding Mississippians such as Ms. Sprayberry, who is a professional, committed, caring and energetic registered nurse who has improved the quality of health for many school children:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we commend and congratulate Ms. Mary Sprayberry upon being named the 2002 Mississippi Nurses' Association's Nurse of the Year and express our heartiest wishes for continued success in all her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Ms. Mary Sprayberry and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
