WHEREAS, Mrs. Jane Roberts, born Jane Herring on February 24, 1903, will celebrate her 100th birthday on February 24, 2003, and will be honored for her long and prosperous life by Greene Lodge Church in Leakesville, Mississippi, on February 23, 2003; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Roberts received her bachelor's degree from "Normal College" which is presently known as the University of Southern Mississippi, and she used her education to enrich the minds of young people by teaching for 40 years with a career that began at Progress, then extended to McLain, Corinth, Pine Level and finally Leakesville; and

WHEREAS, always believing that a teacher should study her pupils before being able to teach them, Mrs. Roberts dedicated her life to education by teaching first grade in Leakesville until the schools combined and then teaching middle school and junior high school, selling World Book Encyclopedias, and working to promote 4-H and other worthwhile activities for her pupils; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Roberts married Dewey Roberts from Leakesville and they were blessed with two daughters, Hughlene and Sue, and have received love and support from their grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Roberts endured the hardships of World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War to keep the family going while her husband was at the shipyard, and she attributes her marital success to her Aunt Winnie Williams' advice, "You go where your husband can make a living whether you like it or not"; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Roberts is a die-hard Democrat who has been actively involved in many community activities to make Greene County a better place to live, and she continues to participate in political, civic and church activities, where she recently finished assisting with the "Samaritans' Purse" at Green Lodge Church; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Roberts' character has been shaped by many people, but Jesus Christ has been her greatest influence, and she advises those who would live a long and satisfied life to be fair, honest and truthful in all things, never say things that you will be sorry for and want to take back, always be charitable to those in need and always pray and let others see God in your life in all you do; and

WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Mississippi finds it most appropriate to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by a person who has dedicated her life to her family and the community:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mrs. Jane Roberts of Leakesville, Mississippi, on living a long and prosperous life and celebrating her 100th birthday.
