House Concurrent Resolution 45

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF WILLIAM WEEMS GATES AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.

WHEREAS, William Weems Gates departed this life on October 17, 2002, causing a great loss to his family and friends; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Gates was born on July 5, 1975, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and was raised in Sumner, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, Mr. Gates furthered his education at Vanderbilt University where he received a bachelor of arts degree in English; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Gates received a juris doctor from The University of Mississippi School of Law where he was a member of the Mississippi Law Journal, the Moot Court Executive Board, and was the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of National Security Law; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Gates is survived by his parents, Alex and Lyn, and his brother, George, all of whom lovingly supported him in all his endeavors; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and pay special tribute to outstanding Mississippians such as William Gates, whose great sense of humor brightened each day, whose positive influence and encouragement will always be remembered, and whose exceptional character is a remarkable example for all to follow:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and honor the life and accomplishments of William Weems Gates and express our deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Alex and Lyn Gates, George Gates, Shannon McCoy and to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
