Senate Resolution 49

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MRS. POLLY HOLLOWAY BEVERLY FOR FIFTY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AS AN EDUCATOR.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Polly Holloway Beverly served as an educator for fifty years in Jefferson and Claiborne Counties; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Polly Holloway Beverly, the daughter of the late Jesse and Mimie Holloway, was born in Fayette, Mississippi, on January 3, 1910; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Polly Holloway Beverly earned her BS degree from Rust College, her MS degree from St. Louis University and her MA degree in Library Science from Atlanta University; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Polly Holloway Beverly was married to her hometown sweetheart, the late Reverend M.R. Beverly, for 55 years; and

WHEREAS, they were blessed with one daughter, Camille; and

WHEREAS, she started her teaching career in 1917, when she was a young lady just 17 years old; and

WHEREAS, she has taught the 1st through 12th grades, coached basketball and taught the 3rd and 4th generations of many families; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Polly Holloway Beverly was the first black librarian in Jefferson County; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Polly Holloway Beverly was the Head Librarian for Claiborne County, where she helped establish and reorganize the Library System at Addison High School; and

WHEREAS, she was loved by her students as a kind, fair, soft-spoken teacher with a quick smile and affectionately known as "Ms. Polly"; and

WHEREAS, she considers her greatest reward in teaching is to have lived to see so many of her students complete their education and become leaders in their communities; and

WHEREAS, she was active in professional and civic affairs; and

WHEREAS, she was a member of the National Education Association, MTA, American Library Association, Mississippi Library Association, the American Red Cross, National Federation of Colored Women Clubs and the Mt. Zion Church of God in Christ; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Polly Holloway Beverly helped establish and became the first Director of the American Red Cross for Jefferson County; and

WHEREAS, she is still very active as a youthful 92-year-old, who still loves to travel with her daughter; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Senate of the State of Mississippi to recognize and commend the dedicated service of the citizens of the State of Mississippi:

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSISSIPPI SENATE, That we do hereby commend Mrs. Polly Holloway Beverly for over fifty years of dedicated service to the children of this state as an educator.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Polly Holloway Beverly.
