A RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING CLARENCE WEBSTER III, SENIOR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI, FOR HIS SPECIAL RECOGNITION DURING THE FIFTEENTH ANNUAL HIGHER EDUCATION APPRECIATION DAY WORKING FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE (H.E.A.D.W.A.E.) PROGRAM.
WHEREAS, seventy-six outstanding students and faculty members from thirty-eight Mississippi public and private universities and colleges received special recognition from the Mississippi Legislature on Tuesday, February 19, 2002, during the Fifteenth Annual Higher Education Appreciation Day, Working for Academic Excellence (H.E.A.D.W.A.E.) program; and
WHEREAS, the H.E.A.D.W.A.E. observance was established in 1988 by legislative resolution to honor individual academic achievement and the overall contribution of the state's public and private institutions of higher learning, and is supported by the state's corporate community; and
WHEREAS, the student honoree representing the University of Mississippi at this program was Clarence Webster III, of Jackson, Mississippi, who is a senior majoring in History and Political Science; and
WHEREAS, Clarence's resume is as follows: 3.8 GPA; Phi Beta Kappa; McDonnell Barksdale Honors College; Phi Kappa Phi; Omicron Delta Kappa; Alpha Lambda Delta; Phi Eta Sigma; Project PULL Mentee of the Year; National Society of Collegiate Scholars; President, Lambda Sigma; and Jones Foundation Scholar; President, Associated Student Body; President, Alpha Phi Alpha; Senator, McDonnell Barksdale Honors College; Executive Liaison, Associated Student Body; Director, Standing Committees, Associated Student Body; Treasurer, Black Student Union; Coach, Flag Football; and graduate, Clinton High School, Clinton, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, his parents are Clarence and Dorothy Jean Webster, Jr., and Clarence's career goal is: "It is my most sincere hope that I will, after law school, come back to Mississippi and practice law for the state"; and
WHEREAS, the superior quality of educational instruction at the University of Mississippi and our other public and private colleges and universities has permitted Mississippi to successfully attract and retain some of the brightest and most academically talented students in the state and nation, which is exemplified by the award presented to Clarence this year; and
WHEREAS, the Senate of the State of Mississippi believes that it is most appropriate to pay special tribute to and bring deserved recognition and attention to those students of our state's universities and colleges who exemplify outstanding academic achievement, demonstrating that a quality education can be found within the borders of our state, and it is with great pride that we recognize the accomplishments of this student who has brought honor to his community, his university and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we hereby congratulate Clarence Webster III of Jackson, Mississippi, a Senior at the University of Mississippi, for his special recognition at the Fifteenth Annual Higher Education Appreciation Day--Working for Academic Excellence, as most representative of the finest traditions in outstanding academic achievement, and wish him continued success in his future academic and career endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Clarence Webster III and his family, be forwarded to the Chancellor of the University of Mississippi, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
