Senate Concurrent Resolution 597

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING EUGENE C. TULLOS FOR HIS MANY CONTRIBUTIONS IN DOCUMENTING THE HISTORY OF SMITH COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI.

WHEREAS, Eugene C. Tullos has made many contributions in documenting the history of Smith County, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Tullos has identified, along with the Department of Archives and History, historical markers designating the old Harrison Hotel; the birthplace of Mississippi Governor and United States Senator Anselm McLaurin; antebellum Boykin Church; the Smith County Courthouse; and locations of Colonel Benjamin's calvary force crossing the McAdore Bridge over Leaf River on its mission through Mississippi as part of General Ulysses S. Grant's Vicksburg Campaign; and

WHEREAS, Eugene C. Tullos has thoroughly researched and written articles appearing monthly in The Smith County Reformer highlighting notable Smith Countians and memorable events in Smith County history, thus keeping alive the vibrant past of the county; and

WHEREAS, Eugene C. Tullos has, after countless hours and telephone calls, obtained photographs of numerous Smith Countians who served in the Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War and Vietnam War, and he has shared, for posterity, a permanent monument of those men and women from Smith County who gave the supreme sacrifice in combat in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War by displaying their photographs in the Smith County Courthouse; and

WHEREAS, Eugene C. Tullos is commemorating those Smith County veterans who served in combat situations in World Wars I and II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War by having their names engraved in a marble monument erected on the Smith County Courthouse lawn which will be a reminder to all persons of the participation of men and women from all over Smith County in keeping our nation free from foreign tyranny; and

WHEREAS, the waiting room of the Tullos Building is covered with copies of photos and newspaper articles of interest to Smith Countians and to those who are interested in Mississippi history; and

WHEREAS, people from all over the United States have visited Raleigh, Mississippi, to view the photographs of the slain soldiers, sailors and marines exhibited in the courthouse and the "wallpaper" in the Tullos Building; and

WHEREAS, hardly a day passes without someone coming by the Tullos Building only to look at the photographs of their ancestors, old friends and neighbors, or to discover for themselves the exciting past of Smith County, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize and commend outstanding citizens, such as Eugene C. Tullos:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Eugene C. Tullos for his many contributions in documenting the history of Smith County, Mississippi.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Eugene C. Tullos and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
