A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY 6-11, 2002, AS "KOMEN WEEK" IN MISSISSIPPI TO RECOGNIZE THE MISSION AND ACTIVITIES OF THE CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI CHAPTER OF THE SUSAN G. KOMEN BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION.

     WHEREAS, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is an international nonprofit organization established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died of breast cancer at the age of 36; and

     WHEREAS, the mission of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, with more than 100 chapters throughout the United States and several foreign countries, is to eradicate breast cancer as a life threatening disease by advancing research, education screening and treatment; and

     WHEREAS, to facilitate this important mission in Mississippi, the Central Mississippi Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was created in the year 1999, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, being a woman and growing older puts all women at risk for breast cancer and this year more than 183,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer, 2,000 of these cases being Mississippi women; and

     WHEREAS, three exciting events scheduled in the month of May will raise funds used to finance breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs for the medically underserved in the 30-county area serviced by the Central Mississippi Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.  One-fourth of the proceeds raised will go toward breast cancer research:  "Golf for the Cure," a golf tournament organized by the Executive Women's Golf Association, will be held at Lake Caroline Golf Club on May 9, 2002; a "Racquets for the Cure" tennis tournament will be held at Parham Bridges Tennis Center on May 10, 2002; and the hallmark event, the "Steel Magnolias Race for the Cure" will be held in downtown Jackson on May 11, 2002; and

     WHEREAS, this is the first time this event will be held downtown in our Capitol City; last year 2,000 people participated in this event which is made possible by many generous sponsors and the very hard work of many volunteers:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That we do hereby proclaim May 6-11, 2002, as "Komen Week" in Mississippi to recognize the mission and activities of the Central Mississippi Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and in doing so, commend the sponsors, participants and volunteers who are dedicated to eradicating breast cancer as a life threatening disease.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the Central Mississippi Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation at appropriate ceremonies and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
