Senate Concurrent Resolution 582

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE OF NORMAN E. PEVEY AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.

WHEREAS, Norman E. Pevey departed this life on January 7, 2002, causing great loss to his family and friends; and

WHEREAS, born on January 25, 1913, in Lincoln County, Mississippi, Mr. Pevey attended Brookhaven schools and lived there until 1934, when he moved to New Orleans to manage the Hill Grocery Store chain; and

WHEREAS, in 1943, Mr. Pevey was inducted into the United States Army, served in the Battle of the Bulge and in Italy, and was discharged at Camp Shelby on November 14, 1945; and

WHEREAS, after returning from the service, Mr. Pevey opened a grocery store in Brookhaven, and in 1952, he moved his family to Clinton, where he operated Pevey Grocery until 1975; and

WHEREAS, a self-made man, Mr. Pevey was a successful businessman and a caring neighbor, known to many residents of Clinton and the surrounding area; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Pevey was an active member of First Baptist Church in Clinton for 50 years, serving as Chairman of the Board of Deacons, and as a Sunday School Teacher, member of the Church Brotherhood and Head Usher; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Pevey was a member of the Central Mississippi Rose Society and the Clinton Masonic Lodge, and also served as a member of the Woodmen of the World in Brookhaven; and

WHEREAS, as a member of the Clinton Lions Club, Mr. Pevey had 50 years' perfect attendance, and in 1989, he received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for dedicated humanitarian service; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Pevey served three terms as alderman for the City of Clinton, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, on January 14, 2002, Mr. Pevey and his devoted wife, Louise Martin Pevey, would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his wife, Mr. Pevey was also survived by one daughter, two sons, eight grandsons, one granddaughter, 13 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize the lives of outstanding Mississippians such as Norman E. Pevey, who has contributed so much to his community, his church and his family:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life of Norman E. Pevey and express the sympathy of the Legislature on his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to the family of Norman E. Pevey and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
