A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING GLYNN GRIFFING, RENOWNED QUARTERBACK WHO LED THE OLE MISS REBELS TO THE TEAM'S ONLY UNBEATEN SEASON AND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, UPON HIS INDUCTION INTO THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY MISSISSIPPI SPORTS HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2002.
WHEREAS, the Jackson Touchdown Club and Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame has unveiled the Class of 2002 of the 40th Anniversary Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, which features Glynn Griffing, renowned quarterback from Culkin, Mississippi, who led the Ole Miss Rebels to the team's only unbeaten, untied season and a ratings service national championship; and
WHEREAS, his sports career is a matter of record: multi-sport athlete for Culkin Academy near Vicksburg who led his high school team to a 26-4 record out of 30 games played and a perfect 10-0 mark in his senior season; played for Ole Miss Coach and Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame member Johnny Vaught from 1959 to 1962, and earned three letters; member of the 1960 national championship Rebel squad that also won the SEC; participated in two Sugar Bowls and one Cotton Bowl; First Team All-America by FWAA and Look magazine and First Team All-SEC by AP and UPI and Atlanta Touchdown Club SEC Back-of-the-Year in 1962; teammate of fellow inductee Ralph "Catfish" Smith; voted MVP of the 1963 Sugar Bowl, a Rebel 17-13 win over Arkansas; MVP of 1963 Senior Bowl; played in the 1963 Coaches Association All-America Bowl in Buffalo, New York; member of College All-Star team that defeated the NFL Champion Green Bay Packers 20-17 in Chicago All-Star Game; drafted in the fourth round of the 1962 NFL draft by the New York Giants and in the 14th round of the AFL draft by the Houston Oilers; he played one season with the Giants in 1963; inducted into the Ole Miss Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this outstanding athlete who has brought honor to his university and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Glynn Griffing, renowned quarterback who led the Ole Miss Rebels to the team's only unbeaten, untied season and national championship, upon his induction into the 40th Anniversary Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2002, and wish him and his family continued success in all their future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution be presented to Glynn Griffing at induction ceremonies to be held on April 19, 2002, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
